The following are close-up views of the stock, and the handguard installed during the 1889 retro-fit to produce the "Colonial" model.

Points of interest on the above photos.  The upper hand guard is attached by clips that snug around the barrel.  The clips are attached to the handguard with heavy rivets and the holes caped with wood plugs.  Also, if one looks closely at the photo showing the receiver cut-out, it can be noted that the serial number is stamped into the upper left edge of the cut-out, just to the right of the trigger hole.
